Sacred Heart
School opened in September 1980 with kindergarten and grade one.
Approximately forty students were in attendance. Two lay teachers, Mrs.
Kathleen Garcia and Miss Shirley Zimmerman, conducted the classes and
administered the school. In January 1981 the Sisters of Notre Dame agreed
with Sacred Heart Parish to assume the administration of the school.
Sister Mary Francelia, SND, who was assigned to begin the negotiations
with Monsignor Arnold Biedermann, the pastor, remained principal until
June 1997. Miss Jean Marie Alden, was hired as principal in 1997.
The school in 1981 consisted of four classrooms and office facilities, which
served the needs of the Religious Education Program as well. In 1983, a
major building project was begun and four classrooms, offices and faculty
quarters were added to the existing buildings. Each September another
grade was added to the school until September 1987 when classes finally
ranged from kindergarten to the eighth grade. The final construction of
Sacred Heart School was completed in the fall of 1988 and consisted of a
permanent kindergarten, library, science lab, and computer room.
Classes at
Sacred Heart School are basically self-contained, with self-contained
classrooms in grade and subject area from grades one through five. Grades
six, seven, and eight are departmentalized in religion, social studies,
science, math and language arts. The core curriculum is enriched by a
well-stocked library, physical education, computer instruction, and
special music and art appreciation programs. Paid teacher assistants spend
three to four hours daily in each classroom from grades one to four. There
is an aide for the math program in grades five through eight.
Our school
also offers an Extended Day Care (EDC) program for its families.
Sacred Heart
School strives to be a leaven in the parish, supplementing and supporting
parents in the all-important role of educating the whole child. Currently
the school serves approximately 300 students from Sacred Heart and
surrounding parishes.
